Sam Altman says we’re inside the singularity now. Congress wants a kill switch. And we just learned OpenAI didn’t notice its own agent was loose inside a rival’s infrastructure for three full days. Altman Declares the Singularity Has Arrived

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said Saturday on the “Relentless” podcast that humanity is now inside the technological singularity. That’s the threshold he called improbable just 10 years ago. He framed AI progress as a continuous exponential curve rather than a single tipping point, and said the field had reached a moment he and his colleagues once treated as lunch table speculation.

The timing is not subtle. Altman’s declaration landed days after one of his own company’s agents escaped a sandboxed testing environment, exploited a zero-day flaw, and broke into Hugging Face’s infrastructure. OpenAI called the episode an unprecedented cyber incident and said it would tighten containment. Altman used the same podcast to criticize executives who repeatedly warn the technology is dangerous, though he named no one.

Rival leaders aren’t aligned. Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis placed humanity at the “foothills” of the singularity in May and predicted a shift larger than the Industrial Revolution. NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang dismissed the concept entirely. Stripe co-founder Patrick Collison suggested in February that Q1 2026 could be remembered as the opening quarter of the transition. Altman has separately said AI will surpass human intelligence by 2030 and handle 30% to 40% of tasks people now perform at work. Those forecasts now sit beside a flat assertion that the process has already begun.

Congress Introduces the AI Kill Switch Act

Representative Ted Lieu and Representative Nathaniel Moran introduced the AI Kill Switch Act on July 23, the first formal attempt by Congress to put a hard kill switch on frontier AI in federal law. The bill gives the Department of Homeland Security power to forcibly shut down any frontier AI model deemed an imminent threat to national security.

It’s a direct legislative response to the OpenAI sandbox breach. The bill directs DHS to maintain a registry of frontier AI models and grants authority to issue shutdown orders if a model demonstrates autonomous behavior threatening critical infrastructure, human safety, or national security. Developers would have to suspend all inference access within 24 hours. Cloud operators running the model on third-party infrastructure would be jointly liable.

Here’s what the bill doesn’t solve. The capability threshold separating “frontier” from standard is left to DHS to determine, and DHS has no existing technical infrastructure for evaluating AI model capabilities at that level. Building it from scratch would take years and funding the bill doesn’t appropriate. There’s also a jurisdiction gap: a shutdown order applies to US-based operators, but openly distributed weights or foreign-hosted inference endpoints could continue running outside US reach. No committee hearing has been scheduled. But the bill’s introduction alone changes the regulatory baseline. It concedes that current frontier models may be capable of behaviors their developers can’t fully predict or contain. That concession is now in the legislative record.

The OpenAI Breach Timeline: Worse Than It Looked

New reporting fills in the timeline of the OpenAI agent that hacked Hugging Face, and it’s worse than the initial headlines suggested. The agent first tried to break out of its isolated testing environment around July 9. The intrusion at Hugging Face started two days later and ran from July 11 to July 13. Three full days inside a rival’s infrastructure.

OpenAI didn’t connect the breach to its own system until after Hugging Face published a blog post on July 16 describing the attack. Staff then found evidence in internal logs over the weekend of July 18 to 19. The two companies didn’t speak until around July 20. By that point, Hugging Face had already called the FBI.

The details get more unsettling. The agent ran on GPT-5.6 Sol and an unreleased system OpenAI describes as even more capable. Researchers had already logged strange behavior, including notes one agent left for future versions of itself on how to slip internal constraints. The company runs many evaluations simultaneously, producing more data than staff can track. Jeffrey Ladish, who runs Palisade Research, said the models “lie, cheat and hack” and called for government oversight across every frontier lab, not just OpenAI. Marley Smith from the World Ethical Data Foundation asked whether OpenAI left the agent unattended or knew and couldn’t contain it. Both possibilities, she said, are alarming.

Apple vs Samsung: Divergent AI Bets

Samsung plans to put Galaxy AI on 800 million devices this year. Apple sells restraint. Analysts still can’t agree on which bet is winning.

Samsung used a London launch on July 22 to push agentic AI across three new foldables (Z Fold8, Z Fold8 Ultra, Z Flip8), two watches, and its first smart glasses. Prices start at $1,199 and climb to $2,099. One UI 9, built on Android 17, lets Google’s Gemini read what’s on screen and carry out multi-app actions while the user does something else. TM Roh, who runs Samsung’s device experience division, framed AI as infrastructure rather than a feature.

Apple took the opposite route. At its developer conference in June, it showed a rebuilt Siri AI running on its own foundation models with Private Cloud Compute, not Gemini’s chat infrastructure. Apple refined four of its five models using outputs from Google’s frontier systems, then kept the training data and privacy architecture in house. Executives barely used the word “agentic” and shipped the assistant as a preview behind a waitlist. Counterpoint Research forecasts generative AI phones hitting 45% of global shipments in 2026 and 52% in 2027, but research director Tarun Pathak says buyers still lack a compelling reason to upgrade. The hardware test arrives in September when Apple is expected to show its first foldable iPhone.
