OpenAI shipped its strongest models yet and locked them behind a government gate. Apple lost a top hardware executive to the same company. OpenAI GPT-5.6: Strongest Models, Narrowest Access

OpenAI previewed its three-model GPT-5.6 family on Friday: Sol as the flagship, Terra as a balanced everyday option at roughly half the cost of its predecessor, and Luna built for speed at $1 per million input tokens. The naming scheme is new. The number marks the generation; the name marks the capability tier. Each tier can advance on its own schedule, which gives developers a clearer choice across speed, depth, and price.

Sol set a new high mark on Terminal-Bench 2.1, a command-line benchmark that demands planning and tool coordination. In genomics analysis, it edged past GPT-5.5 while using fewer tokens. On ExploitBench2, Sol matched Anthropic’s Mythos Preview using roughly a third of the output tokens. Two new modes push it further: max reasoning effort gives Sol more thinking time, and ultra mode splits complex work across parallel subagents before merging results. OpenAI plans to run Sol on Cerebras chips at up to 750 tokens per second starting in July.

Here’s the catch: OpenAI classified all three tiers as high risk for both cyber and biological misuse, a first for its smaller, cheaper tiers. About 20 government-cleared organizations can run the models during the preview. Wider rollout to ChatGPT, Codex, and the API is promised within weeks. The company spent more than 700,000 A100-equivalent GPU hours on automated red-teaming alone. Security researcher Alex Stamos warned that walling off frontier tools could hand rivals abroad an edge. That tension between safety and competitiveness is going to define the next year.

Apple’s Vision Pro Chief Defects to OpenAI

Paul Meade, the Apple vice president who spent seven years leading Vision Pro hardware and the company’s smart glasses program, is leaving to join OpenAI’s hardware division. He ran Vision Pro hardware engineering since 2019 and became one of Apple’s most respected engineering leaders. Mythos Freeze Eases, Asian Rivals Fill the Gap

Anthropic disabled Mythos and its weaker sibling Fable 5 on June 12 to meet a US export-control order. Co-founder David Ha framed it as infrastructure strategy, writing that “access to top models can disappear overnight.” China’s 360 took a sharper line: founder Zhou Hongyi called vulnerability-finding AI a national strategic asset and warned of “one-way transparency” when some actors hold advanced cyber tools and others do not.

A viral claim that Mythos cracked nearly all NSA classified systems in hours made rounds on social media over the weekend. BitGo CEO Mike Belshe dismissed the framing as false. The actual event was an authorized red-team drill on June 11, not a live breach. Senator Mark Warner had relayed the account from a closed briefing to argue for mandatory pre-release testing of frontier models. A routine government test warped on its trip from a closed hearing to viral posts.

OpenAI Builds Its Own Chips With Broadcom

OpenAI and Broadcom unveiled Jalapeno, OpenAI’s first custom inference accelerator. It was designed from scratch for LLM inference, not adapted from earlier AI workloads. Early testing shows performance per watt substantially better than current state-of-the-art. Engineering samples are already running ML workloads in the lab at production target frequency and power, including GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark.

The chip was delivered from design to production in nine months, accelerated by OpenAI’s own models. Broadcom handled silicon implementation and networking, while Celestica helped with board and rack system integration. Deployment at gigawatt scale with data center partners is planned beginning in 2026. This is the first chip in a multi-generation roadmap. Micron Becomes Wall Street’s Next AI Obsession

Micron closed Friday with a market value near $1.27 trillion after a 236% one-month stock rally. AI data centers are driving demand for DRAM, NAND, and High-Bandwidth Memory chips, creating a supply squeeze widely called “RAMageddon” that is expected to last into 2027. Revenue quadrupled from a year earlier to $41.45 billion, while profit rose to $28.2 billion from $1.88 billion.

The company signed 16 strategic customer agreements across data center, consumer, and auto markets, including arrangements with Nvidia and Anthropic.
